Sandalwood Sticks/powder/paste are integral to Indian rituals and ceremonies, to mark religious utensils, and to decorate the icons of the deities. It is also used as Medicinal ingredient in many Herbal Medicines, and is also used in many Beauty products too.
Sandalwood has a distinctive soft, warm, smooth, creamy, and milky precious-wood scent.Origin: The origin of these exquisite sandalwood wood carvings dates back to over 1000 years. These enchanting wood carvings chiseled out of the famous, soft aromatic sandalwood is known for its interlacing and fine details.
Technique: Basically, two different types of wood: ‘Sigandha’ (close grained, yellowish brown in color) and ‘Nagagandha’ (dark brown in shade) are used for the sandalwood carving. These sandal wood woods are also sacred herbs which are known as the epitome of beauty. Initially the wood is white washed and then the pattern is sketched directly on the smooth wooden surface or over a piece of paper. Once, the interspaces are casted out, the carvings are slowly brought to life. The chisels then cast their magical spells by engraving the miniature details on to these carvings. The curves, expressions and textures on these carvings have their own fables to tell. Sometimes, interlacing foliage and scroll like patterns are added to beautify these wood carvings.
Modernization: These sandalwood wood carvings now range from figurines of deities to ornamental handicrafts to home decors and utilities. Sandalwood has a distinctive soft, warm, smooth, creamy, and milky precious-wood scent. Sandalwood Sticks/powder/paste are integral to Indian rituals and ceremonies, to mark religious utensils, and to decorate the icons of the deities. Unlike many other aromatic woods, Sandalwood can retain their fragrance for decades. It is also used as Medicinal ingredient in many Herbal Medicines, and is also used in many Beauty products too. Sandalwood in all its form [powder, oil, paste, sticks] is used in all Daily Traditional practices in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Sufism, also in Chinese & Japanese rituals.
